Hate the Game, Not the Player

What up with this trash talk about my man Dante?

Best Last Words Department:
"All right, then, I'll say it. Dante makes me sick."
Lope Felix de Vega Carpio (1562-1635), an insecure Spanish playwright

Lope de Vega wrote (among others) an absolutely amazing play called Fuente Ovejuna. He didn't have to be jealous of Dante: his place in world literature was secure. I expect the poor man didn't know it at the time.

bela, you are the only person I know who could tell me who the guy was, much less what he wrote. And I know you didn't google this. xoxo

I didn't have to: the National Theatre's production of Fuente Ovejuna is one of the highlights of my theatre-going career (I saw it twice and would have seen it again if tickets weren't so expensive) and, last year, the RSC put on one of his other plays entitled The Dog in the Manger, as part of their Spanish Season. That was a delight too. Lope de Vega is a friend of mine. :-)
